Next general election to be held under coercion and violence: GM Quader

02 October 2022

Staff Reporter :
The main opposition of the parliament Jatiya Party (JP) on Saturday said that they were getting messages from the ruling party about the holding the next general election under coercion and violence.
"The current political violence is an ominous sign ahead of the next parliamentary polls. The upcoming general election will be held under coercion and violence. We are getting such messages from the ruling party. It is unfortunate for a country and a nation," JP Chairman GM Quader said.
The JP Chief told this to the journalists in the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital after visiting a Jatiya Party leader Shafiqul Islam whose leg was severed in terror attack in Pirojpur recently.
GM Quader, also the Deputy Leader of the House, said, "There must be the right to speech, right to assembly and right to demonstration. If the normal political atmosphere is hampered, violent politics will spring. It will not bring welfare for the country."
"The politics of the country will go on in a normal atmosphere. That's why Bangladesh became independent. It will be a democratic country. But it is unfortunate that we are being victims of attacks and cases in politics," he added.
Recalling some incidents of obstruction for holding rallies, the JP leader said, "Some days ago we wanted to hold a rally in Gazipur, but law enforcers and ruling party activists did not allow it. It was a peaceful rally. If a peaceful rally is obstructed, it means there is no peaceful condition in the country."
"If the normal political activities are hindered, we fear that the country will move towards the politics of violence. It is not at all desirable. It is against fair politics," he stressed.
Criticising the attacks on his party worker by the ruling party men, he said, "The ruling party goons had severed the left leg of Shafiqul Islam, the General Secretary of Tushkhali Union of Mathbaria Upazila in Pirojpur."
The Jatiya Party under the leadership of Shafiqul Islam fought in the last Union Parishad election. As a result, the ruling Awami League candidate could not win the poll uncontested, the JP leader said.
Soon after the election, local JP leaders and workers have been facing cases of harassment and attacks. When Shafiqul was going to appear before the court for such a case, he came under attack.
Quader said, "It was a planned attack to kill Shafiqul. He could have died if he was not hospitalised on time. Now he has to bear the curse of disability throughout his life. We demand exemplary punishment of the attackers."
