BNP discusses polls issue, non-violent political process with US envoy

UNB, Dhaka :

A 3-member BNP delegation, led by its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, met US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas on Sunday and discussed next election issue and non-violent political process.

The one hour meeting that started at 12 pm was held at the US envoy’s residence in Dhaka, said BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

The other members of the delegation are the party’s standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and organising secretary Shama Obaed.

After the meeting, the US Embassy in Dhaka in a Facebook post said they discussed the importance of free and fair elections and a nonviolent political process.

Contacted, BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said they went to US envoy’s residence at his invitation and had nearly an hour-long meeting.

Asked what they discussed, he said they do not want to say anything about it since the US Embassy has already issued a statement on the meeting.

Five days after Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen’s meeting with his US counterpart Antony J Blinken in Washington, Peter Haas sat with the BNP leaders at his residence here.

During the meeting with Momen, Blinken reiterated his country’s desire to see a free and fair election in Bangladesh, noting that the world is looking to Bangladesh for the next election.

Besides, they also discussed a wide range of issues, including the Digital Security Act, human rights, and the Rohingya crisis.
